ਕੈਹਾ ਕੰਚਨੁ ਤੁਟੈ ਸਾਰੁ ॥

When pieces of bronze or gold or iron break,

ਜੇ ਕੈਹਾਂ, ਸੋਨਾ ਜਾਂ ਲੋਹਾ ਟੁੱਟ ਜਾਏ, ਕੰਚਨੁ = ਸੋਨਾ। ਸਾਰੁ = ਲੋਹਾ।

ਅਗਨੀ ਗੰਢੁ ਪਾਏ ਲੋਹਾਰੁ ॥

the metal-smith welds them together again in the fire, and the bond is established.

ਅੱਗ ਨਾਲ ਲੋਹਾਰ (ਆਦਿਕ) ਗਾਂਢਾ ਲਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਗੰਢੁ = ਗਾਂਢਾ।

ਗੋਰੀ ਸੇਤੀ ਤੁਟੈ ਭਤਾਰੁ ॥

If a husband leaves his wife,

ਜੇ ਵਹੁਟੀ ਨਾਲ ਖਸਮ ਨਾਰਾਜ਼ ਹੋ ਜਾਏ, ਗੋਰੀ = ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ, ਵਹੁਟੀ।

ਪੁਤੀਂ︀ ਗੰਢੁ ਪਵੈ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥

their children may bring them back together in the world, and the bond is established.

ਤਾਂ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ) ਜੋੜ ਪੁੱਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਰਾਜਾ ਮੰਗੈ ਦਿਤੈ ਗੰਢੁ ਪਾਇ ॥

When the king makes a demand, and it is met, the bond is established.

ਰਾਜਾ (ਪਰਜਾ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਮਾਮਲਾ) ਮੰਗਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਨਾਹ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਜਾਏ ਤਾਂ ਰਾਜਾ ਪਰਜਾ ਦੀ ਵਿਗੜਦੀ ਹੈ, ਮਾਮਲਾ) ਦਿੱਤਿਆਂ (ਰਾਜਾ ਪਰਜਾ ਦਾ) ਮੇਲ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਭੁਖਿਆ ਗੰਢੁ ਪਵੈ ਜਾ ਖਾਇ ॥

When the hungry man eats, he is satisfied, and the bond is established.

ਭੁੱਖ ਨਾਲ ਆਤੁਰ ਹੋਏ ਬੰਦੇ ਦਾ (ਆਪਣੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਨਾਲ ਤਾਂ ਹੀ) ਸੰਬੰਧ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੇ ਉਹ (ਰੋਟੀ) ਖਾਏ।

ਕਾਲਾ ਗੰਢੁ ਨਦੀਆ ਮੀਹ ਝੋਲ ॥

In the famine, the rain fills the streams to overflowing, and the bond is established.

ਕਾਲਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਗੰਢ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਕਾਲ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ) ਜੇ ਬਹੁਤੇ ਮੀਂਹ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਨਦੀਆਂ ਚੱਲਣ। ਕਾਲ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਗੰਢੁ = ਕਾਲਾਂ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਾਤਮਾ। ਝੋਲ = ਬਹੁਤ ਮੀਂਹ।

ਗੰਢੁ ਪਰੀਤੀ ਮਿਠੇ ਬੋਲ ॥

There is a bond between love and words of sweetness.

ਮਿੱਠੇ ਬਚਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਦੀ ਗੰਢ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਪਿਆਰ ਪੱਕਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਬੇਦਾ ਗੰਢੁ ਬੋਲੇ ਸਚੁ ਕੋਇ ॥

When one speaks the Truth, a bond is established with the Holy Scriptures.

ਵੈਦ (ਆਦਿਕ ਧਰਮ ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ) ਨਾਲ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਤਦੋਂ) ਜੋੜ ਜੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੱਚ ਬੋਲੇ।

ਮੁਇਆ ਗੰਢੁ ਨੇਕੀ ਸਤੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

Through goodness and truth, the dead establish a bond with the living.

ਮੁਏ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਦਾ (ਜਗਤ ਨਾਲ) ਸੰਬੰਧ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਪਿਛੋਂ ਲੋਕ ਯਾਦ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ) ਜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਭਲਾਈ ਤੇ ਦਾਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹੇ। ਮੁਇਆ ਗੰਢੁ = ਮੋਏ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਬੰਧ। ਸਤੁ = ਦਾਨ।

ਏਤੁ ਗੰਢਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥

Such are the bonds which prevail in the world.

(ਸੋ) ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੰਬੰਧ ਨਾਲ ਜਗਤ (ਦਾ ਵਿਹਾਰ) ਚੱਲਦਾ ਹੈ। ਏਤੁ ਗੰਢਿ = ਇਸ ਗਾਂਢੇ ਨਾਲ, ਇਸ ਸੰਬੰਧ ਨਾਲ।

ਮੂਰਖ ਗੰਢੁ ਪਵੈ ਮੁਹਿ ਮਾਰ ॥

The fool establishes his bonds only when he is slapped in the face.

ਮੂੰਹ ਤੇ ਮਾਰ ਪਿਆਂ ਮੂਰਖ (ਦੇ ਮੂਰਖ-ਪੁਣੇ) ਨੂੰ ਰੋਕ ਪਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ। ਮੁਹਿ = ਮੂੰਹ ਉਤੇ।

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਆਖੈ ਏਹੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

Nanak says this after deep reflection:

ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹ ਵਿਚਾਰ (ਦੀ ਗੱਲ) ਦੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ,
