ਦੋਹਰਾ:
ਚਿਤ੍ਰਵਤੀ ਨਗਰੀ ਬਿਖੈ ਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਏਕ ॥
There lived in the city of Chitervati, a Raja called Chitar Singh.
ਚਿਤ੍ਰਵਤੀ ਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਨਗਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਇਕ ਰਾਜਾ ਸੀ।
ਤੇ ਕੇ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਸੰਪਤਿ ਘਨੀ ਰਥ ਗਜ ਬਾਜ ਅਨੇਕ ॥੧॥
He enjoyed abundance of wealth, and possessed numerous material goods, chariots, elephants and horses.(1)
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਬਹੁਤ ਧਨ-ਦੌਲਤ ਅਤੇ ਅਨੇਕ ਰਥ, ਹਾਥੀ, ਘੋੜੇ ਸਨ ॥੧॥
ਤਾ ਕੋ ਰੂਪ ਅਨੂਪ ਅਤਿ ਜੋ ਬਿਧਿ ਧਰਿਯੋ ਸੁਧਾਰਿ ॥
He had been bestowed with beautiful physical features
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਧਾਤਾ ਨੇ ਚੰਗੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਅਨੂਪਮ ਰੂਪ ਪ੍ਰਦਾਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਸੀ।
ਸੁਰੀ ਆਸੁਰੀ ਕਿੰਨ੍ਰਨੀ ਰੀਝਿ ਰਹਤ ਪੁਰ ਨਾਰਿ ॥੨॥
The consorts of the gods and demons, the female Sphinxes and the town fairies, were all enchanted.(2)
(ਉਸ ਉਤੇ) ਦੇਵ-ਪਤਨੀਆਂ, ਦੈਂਤ-ਪਤਨੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਕਿੰਨਰ-ਇਸਤਰੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਸ਼ਹਿਰਨਾਂ ਰੀਝ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਸਨ ॥੨॥
ਏਕ ਅਪਸਰਾ ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਕੇ ਜਾਤ ਸਿੰਗਾਰ ਬਨਾਇ ॥
A fairy, bedecking herself, was ready to go to Indra, the Celestial Raja of the Rajas,
ਇਕ ਅਪੱਛਰਾ ਸ਼ਿੰਗਾਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਇੰਦਰ ਪਾਸ ਜਾ ਰਹੀ ਸੀ।
ਨਿਰਖ ਰਾਇ ਅਟਕਤਿ ਭਈ ਕੰਜ ਭਵਰ ਕੇ ਭਾਇ ॥੩॥
But she stymied on the vision of that Raja, like a butterfly on the sight of a flower.(3)
(ਉਸ) ਰਾਜੇ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ (ਅਪੱਛਰਾ) ਅਟਕ ਗਈ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਮਲ ਦੇ ਫੁੱਲ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਭੌਰਾ ਰੁਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
