ਚੌਪਈ:
ਜੋ ਕਾਰਜ ਕਰਨੋ ਵਹ ਜਾਨਤ ॥
ਜੋ ਕੰਮ ਉਹ (ਪਤੀ) ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ,
ਤਾਹਿ ਕਰੈ ਨਹੀ ਐਸ ਬਖਾਨਤ ॥
Whatever the husband wanted to do, the wife would not let him.
'ਉਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਨਾ', ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਹਿੰਦੀ। (ਅਤੇ ਜੋ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਨਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ)
ਤਬ ਵਹੁ ਕਾਜ ਤਰੁਨਿ ਹਠ ਕਰਈ ॥
ਤਦ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਹਠ ਪੂਰਵਕ ਉਹੀ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦੀ
ਪਤਿ ਕੀ ਕਾਨਿ ਨ ਕਛੁ ਜਿਯ ਧਰਈ ॥੪॥
What he did not want to do, with due care of his honour, she would do it.(4)
ਅਤੇ ਪਤੀ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਰਾ ਵੀ ਪਰਵਾਹ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਨਾ ਲਿਆਉਂਦੀ ॥੪॥
ਪਿਤਰਨ ਪਛ ਪਹੂਚਾ ਆਈ ॥

ਸ਼ਰਾਧਾਂ ਦਾ ਪੱਖ ਆ ਪਹੁੰਚਿਆ।
ਪਿਤੁ ਕੀ ਥਿਤਿ ਤਿਨ ਹੂੰ ਸੁਨਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
The day for commemoration of his dead parents came, and he wanted to solemnize the occasion for his father,
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਵੀ ਪਿਤਾ ਦੀ ਥਿਤ ਬਾਰੇ ਸੁਣ ਲਿਆ।
ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਸੌ ਕਹਾ ਸ੍ਰਾਧ ਨਹਿ ਕੀਜੈ ॥

ਉਸ ਨੇ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਸ਼ਰਾਧ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਨਾ।
ਤਿਨ ਇਮ ਕਹੀ ਅਬੈ ਕਰਿ ਲੀਜੈ ॥੫॥
He conveyed her his intention negatively, not to observe the day, but she insisted must to adhere (to the ritual).(5)
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ, ਹੁਣੇ ਕਰ ਲਵੋ ॥੫॥
ਸਕਲ ਸ੍ਰਾਧ ਕੋ ਸਾਜ ਬਨਾਯੋ ॥

Arrangements were made for the commemoration and the Brahmin priest were called for meals.
ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੋਜਨ ਕਰਾਉਣ ਦਾ ਸਮਾਂ ਆ ਗਿਆ।
ਪਤਿ ਇਮਿ ਕਹੀ ਕਾਜ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਕੀਜੈ ॥

ਪਤੀ ਨੇ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਹਾ
ਇਨ ਕਹ ਦਛਨਾ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਦੀਜੈ ॥੬॥
The husband told like this, ‘These priest should not be given any alms.’(6)
ਕਿ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਰ ਕਿ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ (ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣਾਂ) ਨੂੰ ਦੱਛਣਾਂ ਆਦਿ ਕੁਝ ਨਾ ਦੇ ॥੬॥
ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਭਾਖਾ ਮੈ ਢੀਲ ਨ ਕੈਹੌ ॥
ਇਸਤਰੀ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ, ਮੈਂ ਢਿਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਾਂਗੀ
ਟਕਾ ਟਕਾ ਬੀਰਾ ਜੁਤ ਦੈਹੌ ॥
‘No’ she said without any hesitation, ‘I will definitely give each one of them a coin of takka.
ਅਤੇ ਪਾਨ ਦੇ ਬੀੜੇ ਸਹਿਤ ਇਕ ਇਕ ਟਕਾ (ਸਭ ਨੂੰ) ਦੇਵਾਂਗੀ।
ਦਿਜਨ ਦੇਤ ਅਬ ਬਿਲੰਬ ਨ ਕਰਿਹੌ ॥
‘No’ she said without any hesitation, ‘I will definitely give each one of them a coin of takka.
ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਣੋ ਮੈਂ ਦੇਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਾਂਗੀ
ਤੋਰ ਮੂੰਡ ਪਰ ਬਿਸਟਾ ਭਰਿਹੌ ॥੭॥
‘Don’t check me as I will definitely give them alms and I will shave your head off (put you in shame) and blacken your face (for thinking meanly)’.(7)
ਅਤੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਸਟਾ ਭਰਾਂਗੀ ॥੭॥
ਤਬ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਨ ਸਭ ਬੈਠ ਜਿਵਾਏ ॥
‘Don’t check me as I will definitely give them alms and I will shave your head off (put you in shame) and blacken your face (for thinking meanly)’.(7)
ਤਦ (ਉਸ ਨੇ) ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬਿਠਾ ਕੇ ਭੋਜਨ ਕਰਾਇਆ
ਅਧਿਕ ਦਰਬੁ ਦੈ ਧਾਮ ਪਠਾਏ ॥
All the priests were entertained with meals and they bid farewell with meals and they bid farewell with sufficient amount of money.
ਅਤੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰਾ ਧਨ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਘਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੇਜਿਆ।
ਪੁਨਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਸੌ ਤਿਨ ਐਸ ਉਚਾਰੀ ॥
All the priests were entertained with meals and they bid farewell with meals and they bid farewell with sufficient amount of money.
ਉਸ (ਪਤੀ) ਨੇ ਫਿਰ ਪਤਨੀ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ
ਸੁਨਹੁ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਕੀ ਰੀਤਿ ਪਿਆਰੀ ॥੮॥
He, then, told his wife to observe the tradition of Shastras.’(8)
ਕਿ ਹੇ ਪਿਆਰੀ! ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਦੀ ਰੀਤ ਸੁਣੋ ॥੮॥
