ਗਿਰੰਤ ਗਿਰਿ ਪਤਿਤ ਪਾਤਾਲੰ ਜਲੰਤ ਦੇਦੀਪੵ ਬੈਸ੍ਵਾਂਤਰਹ ॥
You may drop down from the mountains, and fall into the nether regions of the underworld, or be burnt in the blazing fire,
ਪਹਾੜ ਤੋਂ ਡਿੱਗ ਕੇ ਪਾਤਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਜਾ ਪੈਣਾ, ਭੜਕਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਵਿਚ ਸੜਨਾ, ਗਿਰੰਤ = ਡਿੱਗ ਕੇ। ਗਿਰਿ = ਪਹਾੜ (गिरि)। ਦੇਦੀਪ੍ਯ੍ਯ = ਬਲਦੀ, ਭੜਕਦੀ। ਬੈਸ੍ਵਾਂਤਰਹ = ਅੱਗ (वैश्वानर)।
ਬਹੰਤਿ ਅਗਾਹ ਤੋਯੰ ਤਰੰਗੰ ਦੁਖੰਤ ਗ੍ਰਹ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਜਨਮੰ ਤ ਮਰਣਹ ॥
or swept away by the unfathomable waves of water; but the worst pain of all is household anxiety, which is the source of the cycle of death and rebirth.
ਡੂੰਘੇ ਪਾਣੀਆਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਠਿੱਲਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਰੁੜ੍ਹ ਜਾਣਾ- ਘਰ ਦੀ ਚਿੰਤਾ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ) ਅਤੇ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਤੋਂ (ਬਚਣ ਲਈ) ਅਗਾਹ = ਡੂੰਘੇ। ਤੋਯੰ = (तोयं) ਪਾਣੀ। ਤਰੰਗੰ = ਲਹਿਰਾਂ (तरंग = a wave)। ਦੁਖੰਤ = ਦੁਖੀ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੀ। ਗ੍ਰਹ = ਘਰ (गृह)। ਗ੍ਰਹ ਚਿੰਤਾ-ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ।
ਅਨਿਕ ਸਾਧਨੰ ਨ ਸਿਧੵਤੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਅਸਥੰਭੰ ਅਸਥੰਭੰ ਅਸਥੰਭੰ ਸਬਦ ਸਾਧ ਸ੍ਵਜਨਹ ॥੧੭॥
No matter what you do, you cannot break its bonds, O Nanak. Man's only Support, Anchor and Mainstay is the Word of the Shabad, and the Holy, Friendly Saints. ||17||
ਅਜੇਹੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ (ਕਠਨ) ਸਾਧਨ, ਸਫਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੇ। ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਸਦਾ ਲਈ ਜੀਵ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਗੁਰ-ਸ਼ਬਦ ਹੀ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੭॥ ਨ ਸਿਧ੍ਯ੍ਯਤੇ = ਸਫਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ। ਸ੍ਵਜਨਹ = ਭਲੇ ਬੰਦੇ। ਅਸਥੰਭੰ = (स्तभ्भ) ਥੰਮ੍ਹ, ਸਹਾਰਾ, ਆਸਰਾ ॥੧੭॥
